Eligibility:
DOMESTIC APPLICANT MINIMUM SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS:
Students who are members from one of the United Methodist Central Conferences and who are citizens from a country other than the United States shall follow the International Applicant Minimum Scholarship Requirements.
- Applicant must be an ACTIVE, full member of The United Methodist Church for at least ONE year. Membership is determined by the date the applicant was confirmed and took membership vows with a United Methodist church (Members of other Methodist denominations are not eligible).
- Applicants must be pursuing a degree program at ANY accredited institution within the U.S.
- High school students may apply IF they will be college students in the fall term.
- Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
- Applicants are required to be full-time students according to their school’s standards for the program for which they are enrolled.
- A student may receive GBHEM scholarships for up to 7 award years maximum. Renewal applicants will not be considered for an 8th academic year for GBHEM scholarship.

The GBHEM scholarship application opens in January of each year. You need only to submit one application per year where it will be screened for all possible eligible programs. You may indicate on the scholarship application first page which of these programs you would most like to be considered. Award amounts below are a general estimate of awards given.
Undergraduate or graduate level student, minimum 1 year active membership in the UMC, minimum 2.5 gpa.
For undergraduates (incoming Freshmen NOT eligible); member of UMC for at least 3 years; very active leadership in a United Methodist related Campus Ministry; minimum 3.0 GPA; will require a specific nomination from the UM Campus Minister.
Members of the Baltimore-Washington Conference only. For students attending a United Methodist college in the Northeast Jurisdiction or across the United States; must be active member of UMC for one year. Required to be enrolled full-time; minimum 2.5 GPA.
Members of the Baltimore-Washington Conference only. Available for the child of a pastor. Must be an active member of a UMC within the Baltimore Washington Conference for one year. Required to be enrolled full-time; minimum 2.5 GPA.
Members of the Baltimore-Washington Conference only. Open to all students, based on need, GPA, finances. May be awarded to undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral students; who are full active members of the UMC for at least one year; have a minimum GPA of 2.5+, and are attending an accredited institution within the U.S.
Members of the Baltimore-Washington Conference only. Undergraduate student. The United Methodist Women Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance for undergraduate students who are members of churches within the Baltimore-Washington Conference. The awards are made according to financial need, academic achievement and active church membership. The scholarship amounts range from $400 to $1,000 per year. Scholarships are renewable; a new application must be submitted annually for review. Payments are made directly to the college/university. This scholarship is not available to the child of a pastor. This scholarship is available to both women and men.
Members of the Baltimore-Washington Conference only. Undergraduate Male student. The United Methodist Men Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance for undergraduate students who are members of churches within the Baltimore-Washington Conference. The awards are made according to financial need, academic achievement and active church membership. The scholarship amounts range from $400.00 to $500.00 per year. Scholarships are renewable; a new application must be submitted annually for review. Payments are made directly to the college/university. This scholarship is not available to the child of a pastor.
Designated for graduating high school seniors entering first year of undergraduate study; 1 year active membership in UMC, full time degree program at any accredited institution, minimum 2.5 GPA, pursuing a church related career.
For applicants over age 35; any degree level; prefer students changing to a second career.
First preference to students in the Johnstown District of the Western Pennsylvania Annual Conference enrolled at Allegheny College. Second preference to a graduate student from Western Pennsylvania Annual Conference majoring in Education; minimum 2.85 GPA; 1 year membership in the UMC.
For undergraduates (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior); minimum 3 year membership in the UMC; very active in UMC leadership; minimum 3.0 GPA.
For any grade level pursuing a vocational career in music education or music ministry; 1 year membership in the UMC; minimum 2.5 GPA.
A scholarship is awarded to one undergraduate student from each of the four districts of the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference, a total of four $800 scholarships, annually. Applicants are evaluated primarily on their leadership or potential leadership skills. Financial need is also considered. The scholarship may be used at any two- or four-year accredited undergraduate institution. Doctorate-Level Scholarships:The GBHEM scholarship application opens in January of each year. For deacons in full connection, commissioned deacon candidates moving toward ordination as deacon who have completed one year of probation, or diaconal ministers in the UMC. Full-time doctoral students (preferably PhD) during the time of the first award period in an accredited academic institution; plan to serve in positions appropriate for the ordained deacon.
For a Female administrator or faculty member pursuing a Ph.D. in leadership working for a United Methodist-related institution.
For an Ordained Deacon pursuing a PhD in Christian Education; enrolled in a University Senate-approved seminary; minimum 3 year membership in the UMC; minimum 3.0 GPA.
For females born of African, Black, Hispanic, Asian, Native American parent (at least one parent); pursuing a PhD or ThD within the field of religious studies who desires to serve on the faculty or in an executive administrative position at a UM-related Theological School; minimum 3 year membership in the UMC; minimum 3.0 GPA. (Has a mentoring component with program.) |

United Methodist clergy, certified candidate for ministry, or seminary student accepted into an accredited Clinical Pastor Education (CPE) or an accredited counseling program leading to licensure or credentialing for pastoral counseling. racial-ethnic minority student.
For racial-ethnic undergraduates (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior); member of UMC for at least 1 year; minimum 2.5 GPA.
For persons of Hispanic, Asian, and/or Native American ethnicity; grade level Junior in college and above (to include doctorate level); minimum 3 year membership in the UMC; minimum 2.85 GPA.
For racial-ethnic minority undergraduates (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior); member of UMC within the Nashville, Tenn., or New Orleans, La., Districts for at least 3 years; minimum 3.0 GPA.
For any undergraduate or graduate level racial-ethnic minority student pursuing ordained ministry (deacon or elder); age 30 or under; minimum 2 year membership in the UMC; enrolled at a UM-related institution; minimum 2.85 GPA for undergrad, minimum 3.0 GPA for graduate level. (Has a mentoring component with the program.)
For Native American students pursuing a degree at a University Senate approved seminary. Minimum 3 year membership in the UMC; certified candidate or pursuing candidacy; born of Native American, American Indian, or Alaska Native parent (at least one parent); tribal affiliation documentation required.
For one undergraduate or graduate ethnic student who is a member of an Oregon-Idaho Conference church. Applicants are evaluated primarily on their leadership or potential leadership skills. Financial need is also considered. The scholarship may be used at any two- or four-year accredited institution of higher education.
Ministry as a Career Scholarship:The GBHEM scholarship application opens in January of each year. You need only to submit one application per year where it will be screened for all possible eligible programs. You may indicate on the scholarship application first page which of these programs you would most like to be considered.
Members of the Baltimore-Washington Conference only. For students of Baltimore City only; who are going into ministry; are seminary students; are in the candidacy process. Award is $400 per year up to $2000 total (no more than 5 years). Students must be a candidate for ministry in the United Methodist Church and from Baltimore City. Student must have held membership in a church of the Baltimore-Washington Conference for at least one year. Applicant must be a degree candidate at an accredited college, university or seminary.
For students who are certified candidates for ordination as an Elder; successfully completed first year of seminary; pursuing an MDiv degree; GPA 3.0+; preference to Missouri Annual Conference candidates but open to all.
For endorsed persons or persons pursuing endorsement by the United Methodist Endorsing Agency (UMEA); completing the requirements for professional certification to serve as chaplains in the criminal justice system. Requirements: ordained elder or certified candidate on elder track; committed to serve as a chaplain in the criminal justice system.

Designated for Full time, MDIV student enrolled at one of the 13 United Methodist seminaries/schools of theology, enrolled as pursuing certified candidacy or certified candidate for ministry (elder or deacon), with demonstrated merit, progress, and commitment in the candidacy process. Demonstrated financial need and how this scholarship will help avoid additional student loans. Applicants will receive and must participate in assistance from a financial counselor from the EY Financial Planning Center.
Designated for ministry endorsed persons completing requirements for professional certification, advanced training appropriate to their endorsed setting, or enrolled in an Association of Clinical Pastor Education (ACPE) training toward certification as an ACPE Supervisor. Requirements: United Methodist member who is ordained in full connection or a certified candidate for ministry; endorsed currently or potentially endorsed by the United Methodist Endorsing Agency (UMEA).
For females, age 35 or older, pursuing an MDiv degree at any University Senate-approved school of theology; must be a certified candidate at time of application for the Elder track; minimum 3.0 GPA; prefer applicants who have chosen ministry as a second career.
For graduate level students pursuing ministry in Christian education; preparing to become a lay professional or Ordained Deacon in full connection; minimum 3 year membership in the UMC; minimum 3.0 GPA.
For any undergraduate or graduate level racial-ethnic minority student pursuing ordained ministry (deacon or elder); age 30 or under; minimum 2 year membership in the UMC; enrolled at a UM-related institution; minimum 2.85 GPA for undergrad, minimum 3.0 GPA for graduate level. The North Carolina Annual Conference Ministerial Education Fund (MEF) Scholarship is available to certified candidates and full time students within the NCCUMC, open to juniors and seniors in undergraduate school and each of their seminary years while working on the basic degree for ordination. Students must attend a University Senate approved school and maintain a C average throughout their academic career with intentions of serving in the NC Conference or within the Connection for at least 5 years after graduation. All certified candidates who meet these requirements will receive at least $1,000 per year with completed applications. Access the application January 3 – March 7.
